Omoda is a division of the Chinese brand Chery, which is China’s fourth biggest car maker. They sold an incredible 2,600,000 cars in 2024 – more than Seat, Peugeot and Skoda combined! Now Chery is looking to expand into Europe, which has led us to get our hands on the all-new Omoda 9. It’s a roomy SUV packed full of tech, but does it offer enough to compete against established brands like Audi, BMW & Kia? Let’s take a closer look. In terms of the exterior design, it looks pretty smart! Up front, there’s a full-length light bar, vertical DRLs, and a large checkered grille effect on the front. Along the side, there are pop-out door handles, and if anything, it looks fairly similar to a Lexus RX – and that’s no bad thing! Around the back, it’s giving Nissan Qashqai vibes, along with a full-length light bar, and annoyingly fake exhaust pipes! But all in, this is a good-looking car. The good design features continue inside as well! There are soft-touch materials throughout the cabin, along with a large infotainment and digital dial screen. The infotainment system is packed with technology and features, and it’s quite responsive and easy to use. There are physical dials for the climate control, and there’s even a 14-speaker sound system, including speakers in the headrest! There’s only one engine available for the Omoda 9 – a 1.5-litre turbo petrol. However, it’s a plug in hybrid, and it comes with two electric motors and a 34kWh battery! As a result, it has four wheel drive, can produce a whopping 449hp and 700Nm, and it can drive for up to 90 miles on electric power alone! In fact, Omoda claims that due to the large fuel tank and battery, the Omodo 9 should be able to travel for up to 700 miles before you need to stop! The Omoda 9 costs from £44,990. At this price point, are you willing to consider it over more established European brands? Stick with Mat to see if you should!
