The 2022 Kia EV6 is the company's first dedicated electric vehicle, and the striking crossover is built on the same Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) that will form the basis for a slew of new Kia EVs. With an expected driving range of 500 miles and fast charging speeds thanks to its 800-volt architecture, the EV6 exemplifies the growing choices and capabilities of the latest electric vehicles. It also offers two different batteries, rear or four-wheel drive, and between 167 and 576 horsepower. The latter applies to the top-of-the-range EV6 GT, which can reportedly accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 3.5 seconds. Judging by the images of the 2022 EV6's assertive sheet metal and attractive-looking interior, it will be a lot more interesting to look at and, hopefully, to drive than its fanciful name suggests. What's new in 2022?
Kia says it plans to build 11 new electric vehicles by 2026, the first of which will be the new 2022 EV6. Now that we've seen the sleek exterior and interior designs and learned more about the specs, all we have to do is wait for the first models to arrive at dealerships early next year. Prices and which to buy
RWD standard range: $45,000 (estimated)
RWD Long Range: $47,000 (estimated)
GT Line: $49,000 (estimated)
GT: $55,000 (estimate) Kia hasn't said how much the 2022 EV6 will cost, but rear-wheel drive models will be available with short- and long-range batteries. Four-wheel drive models can only be combined with the latter, including the powerful EV6 GT. We also expect a less powerful GT-Line trim level below in the lineup. Until Kia announces prices and specific standard and optional equipment for each model, we can't recommend the best buy. We think the EV6 will start at about $45,000 and top out at $55,000 when it eventually goes on sale. Engine, transmission and performance
The EV6 is available with a single electric motor on the rear axle or an electric motor on both axles and can be configured with rear or four-wheel drive. While all four-wheel drive models have the larger battery pack and have a total of 313 or 576 horsepower, the rear-wheel drive example has a smaller battery and only 167 horsepower. Opting for the larger battery increases the total output of the rear-wheel drive EV6 to 218 horsepower. Kia estimates that the 313 hp version will accelerate from 0 to 100 mph in 5.1 seconds. Those looking for maximum straight-line performance will appreciate the 576 horsepower GT, which has an estimated time from zero to 100 km/h in under 3.5 seconds. While the EV6 is based on the same platform as its upcoming all-electric cousin, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Kia is the only one with the performance-oriented powertrain option. If we get a chance to test the EV6, we'll update this story with test results and driving impressions. Range, charging and battery life
The Kia EV6 offers two battery sizes: a 58.0 kWh and a 77.4 kWh pack. Obviously the bigger ones offer a wider range. Kia estimates the EV6 will provide up to 300 miles of range on a single charge, but we won't know for sure until official figures are released. In addition to an operating voltage of 800 volts, Kia says the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in less than 18 minutes when connected to a 350 kW fast charger. This same setup would also add 70 miles in less than 5 minutes. The 11 kW on-board charger is expected to charge the battery from 10 to 100 percent in 7 hours when plugged into a Level 2 outlet.
