Porsche has graced us with two incredible RS cars in 2022, and we’re here to find out which is best. The new GT3 RS isn’t just inspired by motorsport, it’s a full-blown race car. The engine is a 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six revving to 9,000rpm and producing 518bhp. It’s got 860kg of downforce at 177mph and 406kg at 124mph, well over double those of the 991.2 GT3 RS it succeeds. But worry not, this is still not a slow car – 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 184mph. However, if you’ve ever wondered what would happen if Porsche stuffed the stupendous GT3 engine into the back of its mid-engine baby-brother, the Cayman… the GT4 RS is your answer. It’s the most hardcore, powerful and track-hungry Cayman Porsche has ever made. 493bhp, 332lb ft of torque and 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds. Top Gear doesn’t have the rosiest history with caravans. They’re just so dull and ordinary. There they go holding up traffic, dawdling about, being ugly, being tedious, being beige, driving us mad. But then there’s the Bruder EXP-6. God we want one. It has cabin pressurisation, up to 650mm of ground clearance, 600W of solar panels, 33-inch tyres, is mostly bulletproof and thanks to eight shock absorbers and four three-tonne support airbags, can be dropped off a cliff and emerge unscathed. The same does not apply to the contents. Land Rover probably claims as much for the Defender, but if I had to be the contents in one of them and dropped from a great height, it would be the one with a king-size double bed. Far above and beyond the very mortal abilities of a regular caravan, it is a proper survival wagon. So, what are we doing with it? The turbo spins 3 per cent more freely, the flywheel is 18 per cent lighter reducing inertia by 25 per cent, the steering column now wears a larger torsion bar reducing deflections by 60 per cent, revised lower suspension arms improve camber rigidity by 16 per cent and rear body rigidity is up 15 per cent. Many per cents. Enough in fact for us to declare the new Type R TopGear’s Car of the Year 2022. And not just because of the handling, nor the superb gearshift and the sublime new seats. It’s that it all works in such harmony and is as rewarding to drive as any ‘proper’ sports car you care to mention. It’s a sublime car, this.
