Day 6 of Ultimate Adventure (UA) was a road day, traveling from Oliver Springs to Kimball, Tennessee. After all of these years, though, the group knows that UA isn’t just going to lead them down the interstate. Instead, it led them down US 129, through the “Tail of the Dragon” to Deals Gap, North Carolina. The Tail of the Dragon is an 11-mile paved road with 318 turns—popular with motorcycles and sports cars. The final day of Ultimate Adventure (UA) 2022 wrapped up on Day 7 at Coalmont OHV Park in Coalmont, Tennessee. Unlike the private parks visited earlier in the week, Coalmont is public land that the town bought from Grundy County with federal RTP funds, and although past years that have ended with a bang (literally) as participants abandoned the mantra of “wheel for the week, not for the day,” this year was relatively tame, covering trails in the 1,347-acre park. Still, the day started roughly for invited reader Matt Anderson, whose 302 engine developed a bad rod-knock. On Day 5, the UA crew didn't have to go far before hitting the trail for the day. Windrock Park not only has tent camping sites, but cabins, hot showers, and RV hookups as well. Windrock also has 73,000 acres of trails, making it the largest private OHV park in the country. The attendees of UA just scratched the surface of the 300 miles of trails that Windrock has to offer, starting on Trail 39 (Cadillac Hill) and then hitting Trail 40 before the sun started setting. Back at camp, Ken Smith treated everyone to fajitas for dinner, and tires were aired up and vehicles inspected for damage in anticipation of another long road day on Day 6. Day 4 of Ultimate Adventure (UA) started with a bang … well, for at least one person on the trip. In the first ten miles of the day, Ian Johnson of FourWheeler TV fame locked up the 5.3-liter engine and/or roached the 4L60E transmission on the Chevy "Crawlerado" Colorado he recently completed for RealTruck. Fortunately, for 2022, Ultimate Adventure is being held relatively close to Ian's Big Tire Garage in Mount Pleasant, Tennessee. After about twelve miles of pavement, the Ultimate Adventure crew dropped into the picturesque Pisgah National Forest and followed Hurricane Creek for approximately 18 miles. Next they passed Max Patch before returning to pavement and clocking off another 120 miles to Petros, Tennessee. Petros is home to the Brushy Mountain Penitentiary, which has been closed for the past five years and is now a museum. After a spooky tour of the prison, the group made its way to nearby Oliver Springs to camp at Windrock Park.
