Meet the Mercedes A-Class! The entry-level cars to the whole Mercedes range has had a mid-life update, and Mat’s about to find out if it has what it needs to compete with competitors like Audi A3, BMW 1 Series & Volkswagen Golf. Starting with the design, you can see it looks pretty damn similar to the last A-Class. Starting around the back, there are some slightly redesigned taillights, a fake diffuser, and an updated bumper. Around the side it’s almost identical, although the AMG-Line edition we have here comes with some slightly extended side skirts. Then around the front there’s an updated, larger bumper, some new headlights (LED as standard no less!) and there’s a larger bumper. The AMG Line trim also looks slightly more aggressive than the entry-level car. Step inside, and there’s one big update – the A-Class now comes with a gorgeous infotainment and digital dial dual-screen! It stretches across the dash and looks stunning. Mercedes has also done away with the touch pad that was used to control the infotainment system, although there are still annoying touch sensitive buttons on the steering wheel. Generally the cabin is relatively well made, although look a bit closer and you’ll find a fair few bits of scratching plastic. When it comes to engine choices, you have a choice between two petrols, and one diesel. The diesel is a 2-litre with 150hp, while both petrols are 1.3-litre turbos, one with 150hp, and one with 177hp. All cars are available as front-wheel drive, and they all come with automatic gearboxes. The new Mercedes A-Class starts from £32,000, but is it really worth it? We’ve got Mat lining up in a slightly tuned Toyota Supra, and he’s about to take on a massively tuned Nissan Silvia S15! So let’s see how these two compare. Starting with the Supra, it’s usually equipped with a 3-litre straight-six turbo. However, it has a couple of mods done to it, including swapping the turbo with a hybrid turbo, and it’s had an ECU tune. These mods cost around £6,000, and as a result, it can now produce 600hp! This power is sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Then we have the S15. It’s equipped with a 2.2-litre 4-cylinder engine, but this is no ordinary engine – it’s been fully built specifically for this car! As a result, it’s able to produce an incredible 700hp! In terms of the cost of the mods, it’s oh-so-much more than the Supra, costing at least £80,000!! What’s more, this Nissan also has one big disadvantage compared to the Toyota – it’s equipped with a 6-speed manual gearbox! We’ve got Mat lining up in the Koenigsegg Agera RST, and he’s about to go head-to-head against a Tesla Model S PLAID and a supercharged Suzuki Hayabusa! So let’s see how these three monsters compare, and of course, we’ve got to start with the Koenigsegg! It’s powered by an incredible 5-litre twin-turbo V8 that delivers an eye-watering 1,360kg and 1,573Nm of torque. It’s equipped with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and sends all of its power to the rear wheels. It’s also super light, tipping the scales at 1,395kg, and it’s easily the most expensive car Mat has ever drag-raced, with an estimated value of £3,500,000!! Alongside it, we have the Tesla Model S Plaid. It’s equipped with three motors, and they combine to put down 1,020hp and 1,420Nm, with all of this power being sent to all four wheels. Naturally, being electric, it’s weighed down a bit by the batteries and motors, and as a result, it weighs in at 2,190kg. Then finally we have the Hayabusa. But this is no usual Suzuki Hayabusa! It’s had a supercharger fitted to it, and as a result, its 1.3-litre 4-cylinder engine produces 385hp and 280Nm of torque! This power is sent to the rear wheels, and of course, it’s oh-so light, weighing in at 257kg. So how will this one play out – will the electric power of the Tesla propel it to victory? Or will either the Koenigsegg or Hayabusa sneak it? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!
