We’ve got our hands on all four generations of Ariel Atom, and they’re about to go head-to-head over the quarter-mile! The question is, how much has this track-focused legend progressed? Let’s find out. Starting with the original Atom 1, it’s powered by a 1.8-litre NA 4-cylinder that produces 120hp and 145Nm. This is sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual, and it only weighs 456kg! These days it’ll cost around £25,000. Next up is the Atom 2. It has a 2-litre supercharged 4-cylinder that puts down 300hp and 259Nm. Power is sent to the rear via a 6-speed manual, and it tips the scales at 496kg. In 2025, it’ll cost around £40,000. Alongside it, we have the 3.5-R. It’s also powered by a 2-litre supercharged 4-cylinder, but in this instance it creates 355hp and 330Nm. This is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed sequential, and it tips the scales at 550kg. As new, it costs £80,000. Then finally we have the latest edition, the 4R. It rolls up with a 2-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder, and it creates 406hp and 500Nm. It has rear wheel drive, a 6-speed sequential, and it tips the scales at 665kg. As new, it costs an eye-watering £140,000! So will it be a walkover for the 4R? Or could one of the older, lighter models spring a surprise? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE! It’s an all-new mid-sized electric SUV, and it’s meant to compete with class leaders such as the Kia EV3 and Hyundai Kona Electric. The question is, should the Elroq be at the top of your shopping list if you’re in the market for a car such as this? Let’s take a closer look. Regarding the design, the Elroq looks pretty stylish on the outside. Given it’s electric there’s no grille at the front but the split DRLs and headlights help give it presence, as do the grooves on the bonnet. Along the side the satin roof bars stand out to help give it some definition, while around the back it’s all pretty standard, but then again that’s no bad thing! Step inside and you might be surprised by how much room there is, especially for passengers in the back! Up front, the majority of the cabin is covered in soft-touch materials, and there’s a large infotainment screen on the dash. Unfortunately, the climate controls are managed through the screen, but at least the system is pretty responsive. There’s loads of storage to be found, and there’s also a digital driver display, although it’s relatively small. There are a couple of models available in the Elroq range. It kicks off with the Elroq 50, which is equipped with a single motor for 170hp, a 52kWh battery, and a claimed range of 232 miles. The model we’re reviewing here is the 85, which has a 77kWh battery, a claimed range of 355 miles, and a single motor. The entry-level Elroq is priced from £31,510, rising up to around £40,000 for the top-of-the-range edition. So is it worth it? You’ll need to stick with Mat to see for yourself!
