It’s not often Top Gear’s Head of Car Testing has his head scrambled by a fast machine, but the Koenigsegg Jesko Attack is a very fast machine indeed. A 1578bhp twin-turbo 5.0-litre V8 is partly to blame, and with carbonfibre keeping the weight down, not much blunts the performance either. Then there’s the downforce, up to 1400kg of it, which means the Jesko Attack is not merely fast in a straight line. Clearly, we needed somewhere suitably proper to test such a car, and that place is our very own TG Test Track. For Volvo, this is the big one. Both physically and metaphorically, as not only is the all-new, all-electric EX90 over 5m long and closer to three tonnes than two, it’s rather important for the Swedish company’s future as well. Gone are the days of Volvo being led by estates; it’s now fronted by SUVs, and this is the headline act. The appeal for families – because no single person is buying one – is sleek Swedish styling, a plethora of computing power to protect your precious ones, and the knowledge it rolled out of a climate-neutral factory with a chunk of it made from recycled materials. No tailpipe emissions, either. And yet, EV sales have faltered since the EX90 was unveiled in late ’22, and Volvo has stumbled too, delaying EX90 production from early 2024 to late ’24 for additional software development and testing. Still, it’s with us now, and only has to best the likes of Tesla, and electric SUVs from all of the German brands, to get ahead. No small ask. Is the Volvo EX90 up to the task? The ‘Vanquish’ name is back at Aston Martin, and someone clearly decided that simply body-kitting a DB12 and winding up the turbo boost wasn’t enough. Good call. The new Vanquish is a very different machine: with an extra 80mm in the wheelbase purely for beauty’s sake, an 835hp bi-turbo V12 rubbing Ferrari’s nose in it, and a new carbon-skinned body that – for once – looks noticeably different to other Aston Martins in the range. Heck, you’re paying north of £300,000 for one of these. That’s the sort of bespoke treatment you expect. This isn’t just a faster Rimac Nevera – because that would be ridiculous. No one could possibly want for more power or speed than a Nevera offers. But apparently, would-be customers were telling boss Mate Rimac that while they appreciated the 1888bhp EV hypercar’s comfort and GT abilities, they wanted something a bit bitier in the corners. Hence the Nevera R arrives, with 15% more downforce, 10% less understeer, and 100% more attitude. Anyone else seeing echoes of Lamborghini Aventador SVJ in that tri-support rear wing? Can you see an echo? Never mind. Naturally, the R gets more power: new motors mean it’s up to 2078bhp, and good for 0-186mph in less than nine seconds. But is that enough to make hypercar collectors giddy for electric, when they could have a V12 or even a V16 instead? This is a 914 as you’ve never seen it before, as Porsche and VW’s original entry-level model has had a very-not-entry-level upgrade. The huge overhaul comes courtesy of Fifteen Eleven Design, an offshoot of Mellors Elliot Motorsport, a UK motorsport firm better known for prepping and building top-level rally cars. Underpowered and not enormously successful in its day, this 914 has been treated to a host of more modern Porsche mechanical bits, including a flat-six engine that puts out around 400bhp. Add in a bespoke carbonfibre body, and performance is somewhat of a step on from the original! Maserati recently unveiled a new take on its really rather impressive V6-engined supercar. Formerly known as Project24, the MCXtrema does exactly what it says on the tin – it’s the most extreme thing that Maserati could come up with using the bones of the MC20, and the 62 examples that are set to be built can *only* be used on track. It drives pretty differently too. Not least because the 3.0-litre Nettuno V6 now has new, bigger turbos, a new intake and a different exhaust system for a total of 730bhp. All that power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox and limited slip diff, and the MCXtrema only weighs around 1,300kg thanks to a liberal use of carbon fibre and the fact that there’s only one seat as standard in the race-spec cockpit. Each of the 62 cars will be completely unique in its spec, costing just under £1 million. Not that it matters too much, because of course they’re all sold out already… So, what's it like? The Tuthill GT One is a sensational street legal tribute to 1990s Le Mans racing, and only 22 of these all-carbon GT1 homages will be built. Cooler than a GT1 Strassenversion? Possibly. It’s street legal, and for what’s almost certainly a seven-figure sum, you can have one of the few examples that Tuthill plans to make. But there are a couple of critical options you must choose between – namely, do you want a seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox, or a six-speed manual? A 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six related to the 911K’s screaming engine that develops around 500bhp? Or a twin-turbo version that kicks out more than 600bhp? Tuthill says the GT One was born out of a chat between company boss Richard Tuthill and one of his clients, Elliot Ross. What would a modern-day GT1 car look and drive like? Can it still be pretty while incorporating FIA-spec crash-worthiness and road legal measures? Apparently so. Very much so.
