The Dacia Duster is a car we love, because it’s designed for real life and honest about where the money has been saved to get the price down. But there’s now a new, third-generation Duster – and might it have ideas above its station? It’s been styled, for a start, can be had with a hybrid powertrain, and comes with a bunch of electronic safety kit the brand previously eschewed. To put it to the test, we took one to Morocco. In part because Dacia has a healthy share of Moroccan new-car sales, due to its French ownership and the country’s former colonial status. But also in part because, just as the new Duster is a somewhat different from what went before, so is the Dacia brand. It’s even getting into motorsport, the Dakar Rally no less, and with amazing coincidence, testing in the Moroccan desert during our visit was Dacia’s new Sandrider racer. The restomod recipe is simple: take an old car with a cult following, rework and reimagine, then sell it for a pretty penny to nostalgic enthusiasts. For the sentimental of you with cash to splash, the choices are plentiful too, from Porsches, through old Jag E-types and Land Rover Defenders, via a load of newly electrified offerings, up to the likes of rally specials and even an Aston rejigged by its original designer a couple of decades on. Now though, we might have the restomod to top all restomods… It’s the Eccentrica Diablo, a £1.3m scissor-doored sculpture based on the wide and wild Lamborghini Diablo of the 1990s. The arrival of the new Temerario – a replacement for the Huracán – now means Lamborghini offers all its models with hybrid powertrains. Hmmm… But fret not, for this is Lambo’s take on hybridisation. So, while the Huracán's naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 has been swapped for a mere 4.0-litre V8, it has gained twin turbos and over 150bhp in the process. And, just for good measure, Lamborghini has allied it to not one, not two, but three electric motors, for a 907bhp total. That, and compared to the now-defunct V10, the forced-induction V8 revs higher. To the tune of 10,000rpm! Still want that six-cylinder McLaren Artura or Ferrari 296 GTB? When your resume includes design work on the Lamborghini Huracán, Bugatti Chiron and a couple of Koenigseggs, what next? For Sasha Selipanov, it’s creating his own hypercar: the NILU. This otherworldly wonder is a carbon-tubbed, V12-powered monster, with little to get in the way of the raw driving experience. Which could be quite something, given the promise of a manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive, and that naturally aspirated 6.5-litre engine screaming out 1070hp at 11,000rpm. But the remit of the NILU is to offer an unfiltered assault on all your senses, at all times, something Selipanov sums up as the “holy **** factor”. Meaning the exterior and interior design is as full-on as the design of mechanical hardware, with a stripped-back cabin, and an engine bay that clearly took one look at a Lamborghini Revuelto’s exposed V12 and said: “Hold my beer”.
