How do you replace the Chiron, a hypercar that ultimately topped out with nearly 1,600bhp and a top speed over 300mph? CEO Mate Rimac toyed with a hybridised Chiron and even reskinning his own electric Nevera hypercar, but in the end settled on an all-new car… Praise be, for what a thing it is! The engine is a naturally aspirated 8.3-litre V16 that’ll rev to 9000rpm, and together with three electric motors, the hybrid powertrain pops out a stonking 1,775bhp (or a nice round 1,800PS). It will be limited to 277mph – but don’t bet against a top speed record attempt in time. The interior is, perhaps, even more special, taking a leaf out of Pagani’s book for delectable details, with the exposed workings of the intricate, incredible dials giving the Tourbillion its name. This is a rather special reinterpretation of the Mercedes 190E 2.5-16 Evo II. Built by HWA – who are Mercedes AMG’s behind-the-scenes secret weapon in the world of motorsport – it’s not a lightly tickled-over plaything. Instead, it’s a proper ground-up restoration that even involves HWA building new front and rear subframes for it. Out too, goes the original four-cylinder engine, replaced by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 putting out somewhere between 450 and 500bhp. So twice as much as the original then! The bodywork is wilder too, the chassis is completely upgraded, and if you’ve got a spare £700k you might just be able to get one of the 100 being built. Meantime, if you’re lucky to be young enough not to remember the original ‘Evo II’ in its prime, it first appeared at the Geneva Motor Show in 1990, as a homologation model for Merc’s DTM (aka German Touring Car Championship) efforts. Just 502 road cars were built, while the race car of the same name won the DTM drivers’ and teams’ titles in 1992. Motorsport pedigree? Tick! There’s a secretive company in Germany that’s about to get rather a lot of attention. It’s called HWA, and in just a few days’ time will show the world its first restomod, a £700k stunner based on the Mercedes 190E 2.5-16 Evo II. Who? How much? Fret not, because HWA’s pedigree means its new ‘EVO’ will be worth every penny. You see, founder Hans Werner Aufrecht (hence HWA) was originally the A in AMG, and after selling up to Mercedes in the late ‘90s, set up his motorsport business and has never looked back. HWA subsequently ran Mercedes’ DTM efforts and is the most successful team in series history. Bar Formula One, HWA has pretty much had a hand in every other Mercedes race car too, including the GT3 versions of the SLS and AMG GT. HWA also ran the Mercedes Formula E factory team, winning the driver and manufacturer titles in 2020/’21 and ‘21/’22. Plus, it built the rare-groove CLK DTM road car, and the SL65 Black Series. Then there’s naturally aspirated 6.0-litre V12 for the Pagani Huayra R, that’s HWA’s own, as is all the engineering work for the recent relaunches of the Apollo and De Tomaso brands. On and on the list goes. It’s the end of an era – and that’s no understatement. On 20 June we’ll see Bugatti’s next hypercar, one powered by an all-new V16 engine, and that means the reign of the W16 is over. And what a reign it’s been. The numbers from the unique 8.0-litre, quad-turbo, sixteen-cylinder leviathan might not seem all that remarkable in a world of 2000bhp electric supercars, but when the Veyron was unveiled in 2005, its 987bhp (1001PS) output was staggering. Over the next two decades, power went up to 1200PS for the Super Sport model, the arrival of its 2016 successor (the Chiron) saw a rise to 1500PS, and its own Super Sport variant took us to 1600PS – and over 300mph. Let’s not get lost in the numbers though, despite the Top Trumps statistics. The Veyron was the world’s first hypercar, it and the Chiron normalised four-figure outputs, and the pair remain the only true luxury hypercars. Nothing else has such a colossal breadth of abilities. To celebrate the W16, we took the Veyron and Chiron on one final road trip. Together with Bugatti Chief Test Driver Andy Wallace, who shared a few secret stories – including one of jumping a Chiron at over 250mph!
