What does Mate Rimac – the Bugatti CEO who’s currently in the limelight for launching a new hypercar with a V16 engine – do in his spare time? Why, he teams up with a couple of buddies to solve the thorny issue of autonomous ride-hailing services of course. Enter Verne, a new company that Rimac and co. have founded to: design and build a fully autonomous electric vehicle that offers Rolls-Royce levels of luxury; to re-envision ride-hailing apps with added personalisation; and to create the infrastructure that keeps these ‘cars’ clean and charged and running nearly 24/7. Now, you might scoff, but the rise of Rimac (both that of the company and its founder) has been meteoric, going from unheard of Croatian start-up to a supplier of batteries and motors to the likes of BMW and Porsche. Mate himself is now CEO of Bugatti, too. Will Verne be another homerun for Rimac? Has it stolen a march on Tesla’s forthcoming robotaxi? Yes, Paramount+ has announced that the all-new series of TG Australia – featuring an all-new line-up of Blair Joscelyne, Beau Ryan and Jonathan LaPaglia – is now available to stream in Australia. The eight-part series sees Blair, Beau and JLP hitting the road in Australia, and in many places that aren’t Australia. Highlights include the trio testing out the Ferrari 296 GTS, Maserati MC20 Cielo and Pagani Huayra Codalunga on an Italian road trip, tackling a coffee run across the Colombian jungle, racing the new Lotus Eletre from Monaco to St Tropez against a very expensive boat, and taking on the wintery Alps in the Porsche 911 Dakar, Aston Martin DBX707 and Brabus Superblack 900. The first signs appear promising for this new-gen M5 too, with a twin-turbo V8 powertrain offering 717bhp and 737lb ft, plus an updated version of the switchable M xDrive chassis tech, which offers sensible 4wd, rear-biased 4wd and showboating rear-drive. But… the M5 is now a hybrid. Which brings a power boost – as the V8 alone is good for only 577bhp and 553lb ft – but also some weight gain. Okay, a lot of weight gain, as this isn’t a new Porsche 911 GTS-style small battery, fast discharge/fast recharge set-up. Rather, it’s a plug-in hybrid with a 22.1kWh battery and an EV range of over 40 miles. Before there’s a driver onboard, it’s 2,435kg… So, can it be any good? Bugatti’s modern identity is indelibly linked to the gargantuan 8.0-litre, quad-turbo, funny-shaped W16 engine that powered first the Veyron, and then the Chiron. But when times are a-changin’, how do you replace your headline act? For the new Tourbillon, Bugatti once again settled on 16 cylinders, but this time they’re in a ‘V’ configuration with not a turbo in sight. Displacement is a monster 8.3-litres, it’ll rev to 9,000rpm, and make 986bhp and 664lb ft before you add in 789bhp of electric assistance via three e-motors. The new V16 is engineered by Cosworth, the same British company that’s recently created V12s for the Aston Martin Valkyrie and GMA T.50. How do you replace the Chiron, a hypercar that ultimately topped out with nearly 1,600bhp and a top speed over 300mph? CEO Mate Rimac toyed with a hybridised Chiron and even reskinning his own electric Nevera hypercar, but in the end settled on an all-new car… Praise be, for what a thing it is! The engine is a naturally aspirated 8.3-litre V16 that’ll rev to 9000rpm, and together with three electric motors, the hybrid powertrain pops out a stonking 1,775bhp (or a nice round 1,800PS). It will be limited to 277mph – but don’t bet against a top speed record attempt in time. The interior is, perhaps, even more special, taking a leaf out of Pagani’s book for delectable details, with the exposed workings of the intricate, incredible dials giving the Tourbillion its name. This is a rather special reinterpretation of the Mercedes 190E 2.5-16 Evo II. Built by HWA – who are Mercedes AMG’s behind-the-scenes secret weapon in the world of motorsport – it’s not a lightly tickled-over plaything. Instead, it’s a proper ground-up restoration that even involves HWA building new front and rear subframes for it. Out too, goes the original four-cylinder engine, replaced by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 putting out somewhere between 450 and 500bhp. So twice as much as the original then! The bodywork is wilder too, the chassis is completely upgraded, and if you’ve got a spare £700k you might just be able to get one of the 100 being built. Meantime, if you’re lucky to be young enough not to remember the original ‘Evo II’ in its prime, it first appeared at the Geneva Motor Show in 1990, as a homologation model for Merc’s DTM (aka German Touring Car Championship) efforts. Just 502 road cars were built, while the race car of the same name won the DTM drivers’ and teams’ titles in 1992. Motorsport pedigree? Tick!
