This is Ferrari’s Classiche department – and it’s where the world’s most expensive cars come when they need a spruce up. But it’s only a relatively recent development, as under founder Enzo, Ferrari was a race team first, always focused on what’s next, not what’s past. It was only in 2004 that CEO Jean Todt spotted the value in the back catalogue and realised that if others were restoring and rebuilding Ferraris, the firm itself should have a stake in that. There exists, in an anonymous industrial estate near to one of Britain’s major airports, an Aladdin’s cave of JDM wonder. It’s called HJA (Harlow-Jap-Autos) and is run by two brothers who have grown it into an internationally renowned business that imports specialist Japanese models to the UK. You’ll find Imprezas, Evos, RX-7s and Supras inside, but HJA’s bread and butter is the Nissan Skyline GT-R. There’s always a full spectrum of R32, R33 and R34s on offer, from untouched standard cars to outrageous tuned models built by some of Japan’s premier tuning houses. When Top Gear Magazine’s Tom Ford visited, there was also a rather special NISMO CRS, Europe’s one and only, with a price tag not far shy of seven figures. The track-only Bugatti Bolide is deranged. Because as its starting point the Bolide doesn’t take some lithe and lightweight little powertrain, but Bugatti’s juggernaut of an engine – the infamous 1,578bhp 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16. It’s arguably the world’s greatest hypercar powertrain, and in the Bolide it’s strapped to a true racing car chassis, an entirely new carbon monocoque built to FIA safety requirements. The mad engine and unique chassis are then clothed in bespoke carbon body panels, which look knee-tremblingly good and generate almost three tonnes of downforce at the Bolide’s top speed. Which is 227mph in the high-downforce setting. Bugatti is building only 40 Bolides, they’ll cost £3.5m each, and Top Gear is the first to experience it in full flight, besides chief test driver (and Le Mans winner) Andy Wallace… Over to Top Gear Magazine’s editor-in-chief, Jack Rix, who tries not to be sick in the passenger footwell.
