Three Polestar Design Contest winners collaborated on this supercar, and it’s now a full-scale model that we can prod and poke. Whilst it may or may not enter production any time soon (c'mon, Polestar), it'd be one heck of a rival to the BAC Mono, wouldn't it? Polestar describes the end product as an ‘electric fantasy supercar’ that stands at just over one metre tall and 4.56 metres long. There’s a closed canopy, LED lighting and an excellent ‘hollowed-out’ look that was apparently inspired by a hammerhead shark. How fast could it be? Polestar’s been remarkably coy about making up performance figures, but since it’s described as an electric supercar, we’re going to go with ‘very’. However, despite this car being a direct descendant of the 1966 GT350-H – the first Shelby/Hertz collab and the original rent-a-racer – Hertz was adamant that no track driving or road racing was allowed. Who hasn’t imagined getting behind the wheel of their favourite r/c car? The Wild One Max is that dream come true. It’s a road legal, 38bhp, 48V electric buggy that weighs 500kg might just be the most unashamedly fun car of 2023. And it has provenance. TWOM is the work of The Little Car Company, an ingenious startup that’s spent the past three years creating meticulously engineered 75 per cent scale versions of significant historic cars, such as the Aston Martin DB5, Bugatti T35 and Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa. Now the LCC has reversed its shrink ray, secured the approval of a presumably bemused but delighted Tamiya, and scaled up the Wild One. In the flesh, the Max is simple but irresistible. It uses a welded steel spaceframe chassis, with its cockpit now sufficiently widened so there’s room for two full-size adults. It’ll do almost 60mph all-out, while range is about 125 miles on the road, nudging 65 off-road depending on the degree of tomfoolery. But the cost of all that tomfoolery doesn’t come cheap. Order one of the 100 launch editions and you’ll be forking out £35k before VAT. But who cares when you get to live out your childhood fantasy? The idea was simple. Take a stock Jeep Wrangler Rubicon to a little town in Utah called Moab, explain why it’s brilliant, indulge in some light off-roading and head home with our no claims bonus intact. Except we found ourselves scaling a trail called Cliffhanger, one of the most unforgiving tracks in the world where the drops are so long “you could read a book on the way down”. If you don’t like the sound of fingernails on a blackboard, the noise of Jeep meeting rock isn’t much better. ALSO IN EPISODE FOUR: we meet the Ruffian Mustang and builder Chris Ashton, creator of hand-built machines that fuse the American dream with distinct Mad Max vibes, like the one you see here. But they're not all-show-and-no-go. See, being a keen autocrosser, Chris wanted his Mustang to be capable against the clock. What's resulted is this 7.0-litre beast, now making 625bhp and around 560ft lb of torque, but with the handling and balance to match all of that power.
