This is the latest FL5 generation Honda Civic Type R, driven on road and track. It’s likely the last of a dying breed, an old-school front-drive, manual gearbox hot hatch. One with 324bhp, a 171mph top end, some less, er, challenging looks than the old FK8 and a front end so clever it can outwit its own driver. Seriously, it’s capable of some mind-boggling feats. But is it a hot hatch at all when it’s almost the size of a BMW M3 and costs £47,000? It is when the recipe is right and it’s this good to drive. Honda has been building Civic Type Rs for 25 years, and has honed the latest to within an inch of its life. Nothing has been overlooked. The turbo spins 3 per cent more freely, the flywheel is 18 per cent lighter reducing inertia by 25 per cent, the steering column now wears a larger torsion bar reducing deflections by 60 per cent, revised lower suspension arms improve camber rigidity by 16 per cent and rear body rigidity is up 15 per cent. Many per cents. Enough in fact for us to declare the new Type R TopGear’s Car of the Year 2022. And not just because of the handling, nor the superb gearshift and the sublime new seats. It’s that it all works in such harmony and is as rewarding to drive as any ‘proper’ sports car you care to mention. It’s a sublime car, this. Welcome to a world first. This is the new GranTurismo Folgore. When it arrives next year, it’ll be Maserati’s first pure EV. And it’s quite something: a tri-motor layout powered by a 92kwh battery and developing 750bhp. There will be no hybrid option, but as well as this all-electric model the marque will offer the GranTurismo with the MC20 supercar’s twin-turbo V6 Nettuno motor with either 483bhp (in the entry level Modena version) or 542bhp (for the Trofeo). But electric is the clever one, able to divvy power up between the motors and do complex torque vectoring stuff through corners. Range is quoted at 280 miles on the WLTP cycle. Petrols are likely to be around the £150k mark, this Folgore closer to £200,000. The name, by the way. It roughly translates as lightning or thunderbolt, and will be applied to all electric Maseratis in future. Folgore versions of the MC20 supercar and Grecale SUV will follow soon after. This is the wingless Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut – according to Christian von Koenigsegg: “The name Absolut comes from the fact that this is the absolute fastest Koenigsegg that will ever make.” Yikes. The engine is a flat plane crank 5.1-litre twin-turbo V8 that for the most part feels naturally aspirated and always very angry indeed. It produces 1,578bhp and 1,106lb ft of torque, can rev from idle to 8,500rpm in 0.2 seconds, 0–62mph takes around 2.5 seconds and top speed in this Absolut version is theoretically the scary side of 310mph. We say theoretically, because no one’s found the space, or the brass balls, to find out yet… Only 125 will ever be built costing around £2.3m each, though deep pockets won’t help here – they’re all completely sold out. We like Huracáns here at Top Gear. They have the looks, the handling, and the noise. But what they don't have, despite most of them being 4WD, is the ability to drive down a really bumpy backroad at speed – until now. Welcome to the Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato, a rally-ready raging bull that very well could be the greatest Huracán ever. To make it capable off-road Lamborghini have added reinforced bumpers and side skirts, all-terrain tyres, skidplates, an inlet scoop at the top of the rear windscreen, chunky bolt-on wheelarches and increased the ride height by 44mm over a standard EVO. The engine itself is – as expected – a 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10 as per the standard Huracán RWD, meaning an easy and reliable 600bhp and 413lb ft of torque, with a redline at 8,700rpm. There’s a dedicated engine tune for Sterrato, but seeing as that maximum torque figure isn’t achieved until six-and-a-half-grand, you’ll still have to rev it. Not usually a problem, seeing as that V10 at above 8,500rpm should be registered as an aural national treasure.
