It's finally here: Elon Musk has revealed his long-awaited autonomous Tesla Robotaxi – also referred to as the Cybercab – at an event in Los Angeles, USA. Looking a lot like the VW XL1 (remember that?) the Robotaxi has no steering wheel or pedals and just two seats. As the name suggests, its crisp flat surfaces and full-width light bars have more than a passing resemblance to the Cybertruck, too. This, then, is Musk's vision of a grand autonomous future, and he promises the Robotaxi will be in full production by 2026, with prices starting from $30,000. A fleet of 20 fully functioning prototypes were built to run around the Warner Bros. Studio lot – the venue for Musk’s big reveal – and take passengers on short, obstacle-laden routes. You’re looking at Alpine’s rival for the Porsche Macan SUV. Well, almost, as this is technically the Alpine A390_β, the ‘_β’ signifying it’s the concept car that foreshadows the real thing. That, and Alpine are at pains to only ever call it a ‘sport fastback’, never an SUV. Nonetheless, it is a five-seat crossover aimed at the Porsche Macan and the Tesla Model Y, and Alpine promises that the exterior design is 85% true to the production car we’ll see in 2025. That, and although the interior is all show-car silliness, we know the real A390’s powertrain will consist of three electric motors, with one at the front and one for each rear wheel. However, is it worse elsewhere? See, it’s now a hybrid. Which means although official figures put emissions at just 29 g/km of CO2 when it’s simultaneously the most powerful road-going Bentley ever, there’s added weight. And Bentley’s Conti GT was never in the bantamweight class to begin with. Call it two and half tonnes now.
