Audi and Carlos Sainz have made history. After an ambitious three-year Dakar campaign, they’ve done what they went to the desert to do: win. For the first time ever, a low-emission prototype with an electric drive, high-voltage battery and energy converter has won the world’s toughest desert rally. The Spaniards Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz secured Audi’s first victory in the Dakar Rally after around 7,900 kilometres with a lead of 1h 20min, proving you can electrify the desert. Six hundred and fifty-six horsepower is what you’ll find in the new Aston Martin Vantage. But it hasn’t just upped the power and stuck on some new badges. There’s more poke, sure, but miles better tech in inside, a sharper edge to the drive and some slicker looks – including that mammoth front that grille that’s needed to provide 50% more cooling than the old car. Under the bonnet we have bigger turbos, more cooling, new cams – and a revised agreement with AMG that means Aston can sprinkle a little more magic into AMG’s base unit, upping power and torque to 656bhp and 590lb-ft respectively. There’s a complete suspension overhaul, adaptive damping and stiffer everything, with revised drive modes and a wider spread of abilities. Inside, well, that’s seen a step change. Electric GT-R, is that you? Well, if it looks like a GT-R and terrifies like a GT-R, is it…? It's actually called the Nissan Hyper Force, a radical high performance electric supercar that gets AWD, solid-state batteries and massive performance. Yup, it’s an e-Godzilla. Concept, yes, but all the hallmarks of a future electrified GT-R are present and correct, including a bombastic power output and bleeding-edge tech, with active aero and a ‘plasma actuator’. Intriguing. There’s advanced self-driving on board via a suite of sensors and ‘hyper LIDAR’, and because it’s a concept from the future, you can play racing games (cough, Gran Turismo, cough) when stopped via augmented reality and a VR headset. Oh, all the screen graphics – as per old GT-Rs – were done by Polyphony. So, hot air? Or the next GT-R? Is the Audi RS6 GT the ultimate V8 super-wagon? Well, if you’re a fan of trick suspension and garish liveries then it may well be. And with the RS6 GT you do *have* to have the wrap, though you’ve a choice of two. Your GT will also come with manually adjustable suspension from the excellent RS4 Competition, a 10mm ride height drop, new 22-inch ‘Avus’ alloys, standard ceramic brakes, and a roof spoiler inspired by the 2020 RS6 GTO concept. What it won’t come with, however, is more power. Under the bonnet, the twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 delivers exactly the same 621bhp and 590lb ft of torque you get in the regular £130k RS6 Performance.
